VIP EVENT ($50 or 50% discount with nonperishable food donation)
Meet the filmmakers and historians at a special VIP event at the Torrington Historical Society preceding the film festival. Enjoy wine, cheese, speakers, music, networking, AND the first choice of seats at the Film Festival a couple of blocks away at The Warner Club.
FILM FESTIVAL ($20 or 50% discount with nonperishable food donation)
The films, Songs of Slavery and Emancipation and His Truth Is Marching On, explore abolition, equality, music, and American history. The event will include speakers on Torrington and Connecticut’s abolitionist history, live music, and more.
Filmmaker Mat Callahan recently completed a book, film, and CD collection, Songs of Slavery and Emancipation, working with the University of Mississippi Press and Jalopy Records in New York City. His film joins the John Brown Project’s recent musical documentary for a wonderful night of American musical history.
In addition to the two films, we’ll also feature two historians, Mr. Mark McEachern, Executive Director of the Torrington Historical Society, and Dr. Manisha Sinha, the Chair of American History at the University of Connecticut and a leading authority on the history of slavery, abolition, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. Dr. Sinha also appears in the film Songs of Slavery and Emancipation, so she is kind of a movie star.
